Citywide Crossing Guard Program
The City of Redondo Beach and the Redondo Beach Unified School District (RBUSD) are announcing updates to the City's School Crossing Guard Program that will take effect at the start of the 2026–2027 school year.
These changes are the result of several months of evaluation, community meetings, and collaboration between the City and RBUSD. Through the School Crossing Guard Subcommittee, the City conducted the first comprehensive, citywide review of the Crossing Guard Program in decades, evaluating every crossing location using current traffic data, pedestrian activity, roadway conditions, staffing realities, and engineering standards.
While we have increased wages and expanded recruitment efforts, maintaining consistent staffing across every assigned location has become increasingly difficult. Rather than continuing to manage shortages on a day-to-day basis, the City undertook a comprehensive review to ensure the program can be staffed reliably while placing crossing guards where they provide the greatest safety benefit.
The updated program reflects a data-driven approach that prioritizes student safety while creating a sustainable program for years to come.
The review also reinforced that crossing guards are only one component of school traffic safety. Driver behavior, speeding, distracted driving, unsafe pedestrian crossings, and bicycle and e-bike operation all play an important role in creating a safe environment around our schools.
To address these broader safety concerns, the Redondo Beach Police Department will increase enforcement around school zones and high-risk intersections while continuing to expand bicycle and e-bike safety education. In partnership with RBUSD, pedestrian safety education will also be provided to students to reinforce safe walking habits.
At locations where crossing guards have been removed or relocated, the City has evaluated and identified additional safety improvements, including enhanced signage, visibility improvements, striping, and other traffic calming measures where appropriate. Many of these improvements will be completed before school begins, with additional enhancements continuing into the early part of the school year.
The City will continue to monitor conditions at all school crossings, collect traffic and pedestrian data, and evaluate the effectiveness of these improvements as traffic patterns evolve. The Crossing Guard Program will also be reviewed on an ongoing basis to ensure resources continue to be deployed where they are most needed.
