Dominguez Park Playground is Open!
One of the questions I've received most often over the past year has been, "Why did it take so long to reopen the new playground at Dominguez Park?"
I'm happy to share that the playground is now open.
The delay was not related to construction. It resulted from newly enforced State and County environmental permitting requirements because Dominguez Park is located on property that was historically used as a landfill.
Although the park has safely operated for decades, Los Angeles County, acting on behalf of the State through CalRecycle, applied additional environmental requirements that had not previously been enforced at this location. Before the playground could open, the City was required to meet these new regulatory standards.
Once the County clarified its requirements, City staff moved quickly to comply, submitting all requested technical studies and documentation and working closely with regulators throughout the process. The playground remained closed while the County completed its review and issued final approval.
I'm pleased to say that approval has now been received, and the playground is officially open for families to enjoy.
The City will continue to comply with all required environmental monitoring associated with the site to ensure it remains safe and meets all applicable State and County regulations.
I know this closure was frustrating for many families, especially with a brand-new playground sitting behind locked gates. I shared that frustration and continued to advocate for a timely resolution while ensuring we met every regulatory requirement.
Thank you for your patience throughout this process. It's wonderful to see children enjoying this unique new play structure, and I look forward to seeing Dominguez Park continue to serve our community for many years to come.
