Fulton Playfield Infiltration Project

One of Redondo Beach's largest environmental infrastructure projects is moving another step closer to construction.  And it's right here in District 3.

The Fulton Playfield Multi-Benefit Infiltration Project has been years in the making and represents a significant investment in protecting our coastline, improving water quality, and strengthening our stormwater infrastructure.

While much of this project will take place underground, its benefits will be felt throughout our community for decades to come.

Fulton Playfield already serves as an important flood control facility, collecting stormwater from approximately 465 acres across Redondo Beach and Manhattan Beach during heavy rain events. This project will enhance that existing system by adding new infiltration features that allow stormwater to soak naturally into the ground rather than carrying pollutants directly into Santa Monica Bay. The project will also include new ocean-friendly rain gardens along Ripley Avenue that capture and treat runoff before it reaches the storm drain system.

This investment helps Redondo Beach meet regional water quality requirements while improving our local environment and preserving the flood protection the basin already provides.

This project is being funded entirely through over $8.3 million in Los Angeles County Safe Clean Water grants. That means we are delivering a major infrastructure improvement without relying on our General Fund or local taxpayers to cover construction costs. Securing these competitive grant dollars reflects the hard work of our Public Works team and our ongoing commitment to bringing outside funding into Redondo Beach whenever possible.

Construction is anticipated to begin later this summer and is expected to take approximately 120 working days. While there will be temporary impacts during construction, this project will provide lasting benefits by reducing pollution entering our ocean, improving regional stormwater management, and investing in infrastructure that will serve our community for generations.
